Pack of five cards – Abstract Images of Slate

I took these slate photos at an abandoned slate mine called Cwmorthin near to Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales.  The ground is littered with pieces of slate and bits of machinery.  The natural hues in the slate, the rust from the bits of ironwork and the lichen which has grown over the years have combined to create the rich colours.  In addition the gentle rain which was falling on the day of my visit, enhanced the vibrancy of each scattered fragment.

The textures found in these small areas, none more than a few inches square, have dramatically increased the impact of each image, and you feel compelled to touch them, to feel the rough surfaces which your eyes convince you are there……
